PLANNING 57 - AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

  • First Title: Should be more conventional e.g. blood dripping from letter or static buzz.
  • First Title: Too much font to read – should read it up to 2.5 seconds.
  • Last Title: There should be a shot of the basement like a freeze frame, with Johnny’s voiceover saying ‘will you run into the realm of psychosis?’ because it is more engaging and adds to the intensity.

PLANNING 56 - PROBLEMS WE FACED DURING FILMING

PROBLEMS AND HOW WE SOLVED THEM

PROBLEMS

HOW WE SOLVED THEM

One problem that we faced is the camera that we began with. We started with a Panasonic camera which was heavy to hold and hard to see through as the viewer was small. Also we found that the quality wasn’t as good, and that in some scenes it was grainy.

We solved this by changing cameras. Instead of using the Panasonic camera we changed to the 7D Canon, which has a great HD quality and is a lot easier to hold to ensure that we don’t get tired of holding it.

Another problem that we faced is timing. As our actors are from a different college they too have other priorities, therefore they weren’t always able to film on the dates we chose.

To solve this we made a deal of filming continuously on Saturday’s so that we were always free and that way filming wouldn’t get in the way of their learning time.

We also faced problems when we had to secure a church location. We tried many churches in the area and got rejected as they found that doing a horror film was unacceptable in a church.

Therefore to secure a church location, we went out of area and found one in Stepney, who were happy to help us, and understood the narrative and found that really our character was there for peace and comfort.

Also, another problem that we faced was keeping our continuity constant. We had troubles with this as some of our actors came in different clothing so it didn’t match up to the rest of the film.

However we solved this whilst we were editing. We re-filmed the scenes where they aren’t wearing the correct clothing and when we were editing we cut the two different scenes in half to make a whole scene.

PLANNING 55 - OFFLINE EDIT FEEDBACK

PLANNING 54 - FILMING DIARY DAY 6

FILMING DIARY

On Thursday 5th March 2015, we asked our actors to come in for a quick recording of their voices. This was because we found that some of the voices had a buzz behind them, or weren't loud enough etc. Therefore we decided to re-record some of their lines. Our first actor Faizur (Jake) came in at 8, so we had already written out and got the Dictaphone ready for the start of the day so we didn't waste time as he had to go to his own college too. Our other actor Mizannur (Johnny) came in after school, so just to fill up time we continued editing and already inserted the new voiceovers from Faizur. Although we didn't film, we found that this was crucial for our film to flow well.

PLANNING 53 - FILMING DIARY DAY 5

FILMING DIARY

On Tuesday 17th February, we came into our school location to film the final basement scene. We started off with the make up so that it would come up on camera. Although this was time consuming as we have never done this before, and we had to ensure that our actor’s skin was okay throughout the whole way as him being a boy wearing makeup made him feel a little nervous! However after this we finally got a good ‘dark under eye’ look, and began to film. We didn’t have much time as our actors don’t really like the feeling.

PLANNING 52 - FILMING DIARY DAY 4

FILMING DIARY

On Saturday 14th February we went to film scene 3, which is in the church. We made our way to St Dunstan church and quickly introduced ourselves before we got started. Although we had to keep stopping as people were passing by when we were both inside and outside the church, it was done quickly as the location was quiet and we didn’t have too many things to distract us. However, we did struggle in one section of the scene because we could get the lighting to hit the bag, as we wanted to use natural lighting because it was in the day. After filming this we only have our last basement scene to do, as we didn’t get this done on day 3, and a few extra things that needed to be fixed up.

PLANNING 51 - MAKE UP PART 2

The make up done on our actor Faizur who plays 'Jake' was to make him look a lot more tired from having to put up with his problems and that he is slowly wasting away. We decided to go for this look and used colours from brown's to yellow, as this enhanced his dark circles.

However, as our actor isn't used to having make up on his face, we were afraid his skin might get dry or that he would get spots. Therefore we brought his face cream so that he could apply it after we had finished, and made sure that we used a fresh, tea tree wipe and gave some top tips on how to deal with spots if he got any!

PLANNING 50 - MAKEUP

MAKEUP

For scene 9 we have a section were our main actor gets beaten up by Johnny, for this scene we are hoping to give our actor a black eye to make it seem realistic. For this we looked at makeup tutorials for a black eye and cuts on the arm.

PLANNING 49 - FILMING DIARY DAY 3

FILMING DIARY

On Sunday 25th we went to Stepney Green park, to film scenes 5 & 6. It was extremely cold on that day, so we made sure we all dressed appropriately, but were still dressed for the scene. Also because we had to hold the equipment, we had to make sure that we were careful when carrying it around in order not to hurt the public and ourselves as well as damaging any of the equipment. After filming these scenes we only have our basement scenes (Scene 3 & 9) and our church scene and a few bits from scene 2. Therefore we asked our actors to come in on Wednesday after lunch in order to film our basement scenes as they need to be done, and it also means that non of our actors miss their learning time, as we are all free.

PLANNING 48 - FILMING DIARY DAY 2

FILMING DIARY

On Saturday 24th January, after last week we decided to make a timetable of all the things that would happen today. We went to the church first for an hour as they could do no other time apart from Saturdays, and we didn’t want to keep it going any longer, so we started there. However, the church was not open therefore after waiting for half an hour we got the message and left, but during the week we are hoping to contact them to re-schedule to a date where they are free. After all the waiting we went back to the school location to film the rest of the beginning scenes, although we left out scene 3 because we knew we wouldn’t be able to get any of the other scenes done regarding how much time we had in the building. After lunch we then moved onto the last couple of scenes where things start happening to Jake, we knew these scenes were going to be very long so we gave ourselves enough time to get at least one of those scenes done. We could only do this if we stuck to our timetable and script, otherwise we would be there for AGESSS! On Sunday the 25th of January we are hoping to film scenes 5 & 6 as we don’t need the school’s permission for that as it is placed in Stepney Green Park.

PLANNING 47 - FILMING DIARY DAY 1

FILMING DIARY

On Saturday 17th January, we decided to film our first couple of scenes; well that’s what we hoped for anyway! As some of our actors came late we had to re-arrange some of our timings in order for us to be on time before our location, the school, closed. We finished our scene one and began our scene 2, we realised that this wasn’t enough and that perhaps the next time we film we need to do a structured layout of timings for us to be on top of time ensuring that we get plenty of filming done and for our actors to take a break too. So for next Saturday when we film we decided to be a bit more realistic and keep our basement scenes last as we know they will be the longest ones to do, which will perhaps be done after school one day. Also from this we found that we need to ensure that both the school and sixth form are open for the next Saturday to make sure that we don’t have troubles getting into the building.

PLANNING 46 - RADIO TRAILER

RADIO TRAILER

IMPROVEMENTS:
After hearing this radio trailer we realised that the volume is too low and we want the trailer to seem as if it is reaching a climax. Also we think that the 'Jake' during the end is not as harsh and loud as it should be as well as the slam at the end.

PLANNING 45 - RECORDING OUR RADIO TRAILER

RECORDING OUR RADIO TRAILER

After producing our draft radio trailer we found that there were big improvements  to be made! For instance we now added a male voice over so that he could introduce more of the film, rather than just using lines from the script. Although, it did take some time to produce as our actors had to come in at different times due to their other commitments; however we brought them in separately and got them to record their voices and have a look at what they have produced so far. After getting feedback from our draft radio trailer we needed to ensure that the sounds level were equal and in certain areas only we should make the sound louder, for example when Johnny calls for Jake. However, we decided to keep a psychotic range of noises so it could relate well to our film, for instance in the trailer we say ‘will you run into the realm of psychosis’ we wanted it to sound really warped and twisted so that this is the kind of effects our film will have on our audience.

PLANNING 44 - RADIO TRAILER SCRIPT

RADIO TRAILER SCRIPT

Red – Voice over
Green – Jake
Blue – Johnny
Black - Sounds

A young boy lost in his mind.

Eerie music begins.

Reaches the end.

“Johnny you bringing the boxes down?”

Crashing sounds

“Why are you standing in the dark?”

Will you run into the realm of psychosis?

“I can’t control him anymore”. “He’s becoming so aggressive”. “What do I do”? Overlapped.

“You don’t need those, you’ve got me”.

Silence.

Heavy strong eerie breathing noise.

“P..p.perilous January 2015”.

“JAAAAAAKE”.

Music fades out.

Loud dragging and slamming of doors to end.

PLANNING 43 - FEEDBACK FROM DRAFT RADIO TRAILER

FEEDBACK

We showed our fellow peers both boys and girls to listen to our radio trailer and see what we did well and what could be improved.

THINGS TO IMPROVE:
  • Firstly, they said that we should adjust the sounds of some of the noises so that they are equal and don't differentiate from one another too much.
  • They also said to include a voice over so we could hear things about the story.
  • Also said to perhaps add a different effect on to one of the lines that we said, 'will you run into the realm of psychosis' so that the audience are able to hear what is actually said.
THINGS WE DID WELL:
  • Things that our audience liked were the psychotic noises that we used in the background which worked well with the theme of our story.
  • Another thing that the audience liked about our radio trailer was the use of the piano in the background as it contrasted to the idea of something so elegant to be paired with a horror film.
  • Lastly, on other aspect of our radio trailer that worked well was the way we said 'Perilous.. January 2015" as it suggested that perhaps our actor is running away from something which is why it sounds out of breath. However this works well as although Jake seems like his running from something, it is actually his own mind which plays well with our story line.

PLANNING 42 - DRAFT RADIO TRAILER

PLANNING 41 - ANIMATIC

PLANNING 40 - IMPROVED STORYBOARD

PLANNING 39 - IMPROVED SCRIPT

PLANNING 38 - CHANGES

CHANGES MADE

Due to talking to a producer called Niraj, he pointed out certain errors in our film where our audience may find it confusing or that we were giving too much away. He helped us create more innovative ideas for our film in order for the film to work well with the psychotic storyline. For instance we found that by showing the audience the pills that Jake takes before the climatic scenes, it gives away to the audience the reason why it is happening. Therefore the story is not exciting and doesn’t allow the audience to think about what problems he must be facing in order for the villain to be shown. So we had decided to take out the pills but give hints to the audience that he is taking something, but in more of a discreet way so that the audience are able to put the story together.

Another change that we had made is to our camera, we had changed it to a canon in order to get a better quality film so that everything is seen on the video. Another reason for the change in our camera is because we found that the first camera was too heavy for us to hold when we were trying to get high angles and needed someone else to do. But with the canon it is a lot smaller and easier to handle so we can hold it with ease and also don’t need to hold a boom in order to get the sound, as the mic is attached.

Although all these changes led to changing our scripts, storyboard etc.  It has made huge improvements to our film and we can see that these changes will be successful and eventually turn out to be a super cool film!

PLANNING 34 - RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds is a powerful compositional technique for making photos more interesting and dynamic.

PLANNING 33 - FEEDBACK ON POSTER

FEEDBACK ON OUR PERILOUS POSTER

1. The image should be placed more into the middle.
2. They like the way we have overlapped the text over the image, emphasising the name of the film.
3. Think that we should make the text more clearer so that it stands out more to the audience if they were to glance at the poster.
4. Also believe that our 'Perilous' text should be risen more in order to see more of the image.

After looking at the feedback we are going to take in to account what our audience has said and apply to it our poster in order to make the best poster possible!!!

PLANNING 32 - CONSENT FROM ACTORS

PLANNING 31 - FILMING SCHEDULE

Monday, 15 December 2014

PLANNING 30 - LOGO

PLANNING 29 - RULE OF 180

PLANNING 28 - LIGHTING SCHEDULE

LIGHTING SCHEDULE

Scene 1: We are not going to be using lighting in this scene as any lighting will be from the video their watching on their faces.

Scene 2: We are going to need to use lighting in this scene as the basement is extremely dark, therefore we need lighting in order to see our characters.

Scene 3: During the walk to the A-Block we will not be using lighting because it will be shot in the day so we are going to be using natural lighting.

Scene 4: During the church scene the lighting that will be used will be from the lighting in the church as we are planning on switching the lights off one by one.

Scene 5: The lighting in this scene will also be natural as we will be outside.

Scene 6: Natural lighting will also be used in this scene.

Scene 7: During the library scene we are going to be using one piece of lighting equipment in order to see the characters reaction.

Scene 8: In the corridor their will perhaps be little lighting as we want to keep it dark in order to not notice what is lurking behind Jake.

Scene 9: In the last scene it will be just natural lighting as we want a more darker effect when Jake is getting beaten.

PLANNING 27 - WEATHER CHECK

WEATHER CHECK

Today we decided to meet our actors again as our schedule had changed so we wanted to update them. We also gave them any forms to sign and made them read the child regulations as they are external so they were aware of the terms and condition whilst filming.
As we are meeting our actors we decided to take a weather check to as we are going to be documenting the meeting so we wanted to get the best lighting.

The time that we wanted to meet at was at 5, but after looking at the weather we decided to meet earlier because it will be a lot more lighter and we wont get drenched in the rain at 4. We also made sure that because it will be cold out we told our actors to dress warm so that they don't get ill before filming!

PLANNING 26 - CONSENT FORMS FOR OUR ACTORS

These are the consent forms for our actors to sign before the day of filming in order for us to be able to get their permission to film and document them.

PLANNING 21 - TITLE FONT IDEAS

'PERILOUS' FONT IDEAS

DaFont - Caracura
PErILOUS

PRO – It seems as if the writing is drowning out and disappearing relating to the character of our film who is slowly deteriorating.
CON – May be mistaken for a slasher film as it looks like blood dripping.

DaFont – Pulse Sans Virgin
PERILOUS

PRO – As some words are switched around, it relates to the disorientation of Jake’s mind.
CON – For our poster, this may look too long.

DaFont – Times New Yorker
PERILOUS

PRO – As it is bold it will stand out and the bricks can represent his outside journey.
CON – It is too simplistic for our poster.

From all these choices we decided to go with the first option as we believe that it relates to our film the most and the font clearly shows the audience that it is a horror film.

PLANNING 18 - REASONS FOR OUR LOCATIONS

REASONS FOR OUR LOCATION:

The Tower Hamlets Graveyard vs. CTC Graveyard
The reason why we decided to use this instead of the one next to the CTC site is because we found that the graves were a lot more scattered around the area and made it looked displaced which creates a disjointed look  to our film. We also wanted to choose this because we found that the way the trees came over the graves and the bushes gives it a more forest element so it can link to our intertextuality of ‘The Blair witch project’. Another reason for the use of this location is because we will be filming in December therefore it will be a lot darker, which gives the graveyard a mistier and haunted effect in our film.

The Aspire Sixth Form library vs. The Harley Grove library
We chose this location instead of the Harley Grove library because we found that if we used the one in Aspire it would create more continuity in our film because the film is mostly based around that building. We also chose this library because we found that the exit doors and the main door is a lot better to capture in the film and the spacing of the sofa works well within the shot of the doors.

Victoria Park vs. Bethnal Green Park vs. Stepney Green Park
Victoria Park was chosen because we liked the way there is one huge path. The reason why we like this is because when we shoot we can capture a lot of angles as the path is big enough. Another reason why we chose this park is because we found that because we will we working when the days get darker the bare trees will have a nice connotation in the film because it could signify the emptiness and loneliness that Jake is feeling because of all the things that he is facing alone.

Simple Gifts Church
The reason for this location is because we found that it challenges the conventions of a horror film, and it gives the element that Jake comes here for safety but in reality for him nowhere is safe. We also wanted to choose this location because it showed more of Jakes personality, and suggests to the audience that he likes to help others which is why he volunteers at the church, and makes the audience sympathise for him because of how he doesn’t deserve this. We also found that a church worked well as many people say that this is where the spirits come to communicate so it suggest that villain is here to perhaps communicate to Jake, but the audience don’t know why.

PLANNING 16 - ADV & DISADV OF OUR POSTERS

ANALYSIS OF OUR FILM POSTERS:

THAHMINA’s POSTER:

Advantages:
  • The slogan. By having this it enables our audience to remember our film, also by making it short it stays in the mind and must be catchy.
  • The dark background used to highlight the scary mask is effective as it brings out the look of the mask, and suggests that as the audience we are supposed to be looking for a villain who looks like this, yet we know that the villain is not shown until the very end.
Disadvantages:

  • It doesn’t include the name of our production, so the audience are unable to recognise our company name.

AIMA’s POSTER

Advantages:
  • An advantage is the use of both our character’s and the masks face, this suggests to the audience that perhaps Jake is the villain himself, and that he is taking over himself.
  • Again the use of a dark background is effective because it embraces the look of the main image in the middle of the poster.

Disadvantages:
  • However, something that could be improved is to add a slogan, so that the audience are reminded about the film by remembering something catchy.

ROHIMA’s POSTER

Advantages:
  • An advantage of this poster is that it includes an object from the film, so it gives our audience an insight into the film and an idea of what it will be about.
  • Another advantage is the use of the unclear vision of our villain and how the audience have to guess who it may be, creating suspense.

Disadvantages:
  • However, the object that is in the film may give too much away, so the audience may already predict the story and perhaps may not find it interesting.
  • Also it uses natural lighting, which perhaps does not give it a scary element to the film.

FINAL DECISIONS:
So after looking at all our posters, we decided on the things we would include in our final poster in order for it to be successful. It will include:
  • A dark background.
  • The mask, which is something that is a big part from a film.
  • ‘Perilous’ will be placed at the bottom, in a larger font.
  • ‘X PRODUCTION’ will be below the title, in a smaller font.
  • A slogan will be added at the top in order for the audience to see this first, and will be a lot more intrigued to watch the film.

PLANNING 15 - SOUND CHOICES FOR RADIO TRAILER

SOUND CHOICES

Static noise would be effective as it shows that there is something wrong happening in the current situation.

The song links to Strauss theory of 'Binary Oppositions' as it is like Old Vs New since we are playing a song from the past decade in a modern film.

This is the tone that we would want our news reporter voice over to have as it is firm and realistic.

PLANNING 14 - OUR POTENTIAL POSTER IDEAS

Tuesday, 4 November 2014

PLANNING 13 - RISK ASSESSMENT

RISK ASSESSMENT

Hazard
Who might be harmed and how?
How will I prevent it from happening
Crossing over roads to get to places.
Both directors and cast could drop equipment and cause havoc on the roads.
We will make sure to pay attention to traffic lights and when crossing roads, we will look carefully before crossing. Also, we could try to just stay on one side of the pavement rather than crossing over to other sides.
Inside the Aspire building and on the rooftop.
In this situation, the main actor and the director may be harmed because of anything that may be lying about whilst shooting.
In this case, we will make sure that there is nothing laying around the place such as bags so we are working in a clear and organised setting.
The public - Park
It could harm the public in case there is any equipment laying around on the floor, which wouldn’t be professional.
To prevent this we will make sure to keep out belongings organised and out of the way to ensure that the public are not affected by anything.
Props
We could be harmed by things that are lying around for instance we could trip over the fog machine in Scene 1.
We will make sure that all props are shown to the cast, to make it clear that it is there in order for no one to trip over anything.
Locations - Church
In this location, we could get hurt by anything that the church has left for example if the chairs are left lying around in a disoriented position, one of us could trip over it.
To prevent this, we will go to all locations beforehand in order to clear the space so that nothing is in the way. But we will ask for permission to do this, and put things back if needed.
The weather
If the weather is extremely bad such as extreme winds and heavy rain it will be hard to produce anything and to control equipment.
In order to prevent this, we will make sure we take a weather check before leaving and pack umbrella’s etc. so that we are prepared for it.

RISK ASSESSMENT FOR CHURCH
