PLANNING 6 - X PRODUCTION PITCH

PLANNING 5 - TREATMENT

TREATMENT

TITLE: PERILOUS (Full of danger or risk)

CERTIFICATION: 12

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Our target audience should be aged 16/17 over.
  • Aimed at both females and males
  • Girls that we are targeting are likely to have characteristics of Utopians and Innovators. By being innovator – those who wish to make their mark, we want our character to be portrayed as girls who have an importance and a high social status.
  • Our male target audience are egoists, rebels and cowboys. When producing the film we want it to be thrilling and exciting in order for the young males to enjoy it. Also as rebels, they want to remake the world in their own image and by having a different and quite twisted story line, we are showing them a unusual situation which may interest them as it is not something they are normally exposed to in the real world.

FORMAT: FILM

DURATION: 5 MINUTES

SYNOPSIS:

  • BEGINNING The beginning of the film will include intertextuality, where we will produce FILM 1 (The film the characters are watching) as a typical horror film. This then pans out to 3 teenage girls (Girl 1, Girl 2, and Girl 3 AKA Popular Girls) at a sleepover. As the door opens we are introduced to Girl 4 who is a small girl that wants to be in the popular girls group. The girls end up playing a truth or dare game, which eventually leads to Girl 4 forced to kill the victim (A boy who was planning extreme revenge on the popular girls as they bullied his sister). The popular girls leave an envelope for Girl 4 to read the gruesome and horrific way the popular girls want him killed.
  • MIDDLE The time changes to after school time (past 3:00pm) the popular girls are walking to school for revision talking about whether Girl 4 will go forward with the killing. However, in an alleyway Girl 4 is seen talking to someone else but then spots the popular girls and runs after them. Whilst in school, it seems that someone is stalking the girls but they are unaware of this. They end up walking to the green room, where they start to study for their media work, however Girl 4 seems to interrupt as she comes in with the wrong equipment starting an argument between the girls which makes them leave the room as Girl 4 gets upset.
  • END As soon as the girls leave the room, the camera is still playing where we see the body of a man dressed in black. After he moves out of the shot, you are able to hear the curtain rails move, implying that he is hiding in the room. The popular girls come back in and position them in front of the curtains, starting their work. However, the camera rolls to the top of the curtain rails whilst a voiceover of a news report of 3 girls dead plays. The camera changes to a high angle of the curtain rails and in a quick moment the rails are harshly pulled open and the screen goes black but we then have an appearance of the killer, but the camera is dropped and we see him walking away.

KEY SCENES:

  • SCENE 1: Intertextuality concept. Film 1 consists of 3 young girls running through a graveyard which is shown through a panorama shot, but are stopped by a mysterious black figure and we see them starting to walk backwards in terror through a worms eye view shot which is also canted. After it pans out to the popular girls in a sleepover setting.
  • SCENE 2: The girls are making fun of Girl 4, trashing her room and treating her like a slave in order to show the high status the girls acquire we see this through an establishing shot, to get an idea of the mess. Whilst Girl 4 leaves the room, the popular girls are planning their pre-prepared ‘Dare’ for Girl 4, which is shown by the camera peeking through an opening of the door where they are blurred but you are able to hear what they are saying.
  • SCENE 3: The popular girls set up the truth or dare game and Girl 4 unwillingly participates as she doesn’t want to be ridiculed. By using a high angle we see the game begin and then the camera is span around to replicate the idea of the bottle spinning for the game which eventually ends up on Girl 4. The popular girls mock Girl 4, which pushes Girl 4 to participate. The popular girls show the victim’s profile on Facebook and demands her to go through with the murder and hand over an envelope instructing her how to kill him, which we are able to see through an over the shoulder shot.
  • SCENE 4: It turns to the next day in the afternoon (past 3:00pm) where the popular girls are talking about Girl 4 and whether she’ll go through with it and the consequences.
  • SCENE 5: It cuts to the shadow of Girl 4 and a mysterious figure talking. Girl 4 through a telescopic shot catches the popular girls walking and so runs after them.
  • SCENE 6: They enter the school going towards the classroom unaware that they are being followed by male, dark, figure. This is captured through an over the camera shot and tracking shot. The popular girls go to the green room ready to study, but Girl 4 appears with the wrong equipment causing an argument within the group, leading on to them leaving as Girl 4 exits upset.
  • SCENE 7: As the room is isolated only with the music playing, we see a figure of a man dressed in black standing in front of the camera. As the camera stays in position we hear the curtain rails open and then close indicating that this figure is hiding. We know this as another telescopic shot is used behind the curtains spying as the popular girls enter.
  • SCENE 8: There is an establishing shot to show the position of each character and to show that they are right in front of the figure. As the camera starts to pan upwards a voice over begins to play which is a news report on 3 girls found dead and the brutal way they were killed (which was the same way the popular girls wanted the boy dead coincidently).
  • SCENE 9: As soon as the camera reaches the top, it is quickly transitioned into a high angle where we see the curtains suddenly pushed open and we hear a huge gasp and the screen turns pitch black. However, after this we show the killer picking the camera up and showing his face but then drops it back on to the floor and we see his footsteps walking away.

PLANNING 1 - INITIAL IDEAS

INITIAL IDEAS

RESEARCH 34 - AUDIENCE 'REACTION TO FILM' ANALYSIS

REACTION TO FILM - GIRLS on Vimeo.

RESEARCH 33 - AUDIENCE FOCUS GROUP ANALYSIS

RESEARCH 32 - AUDIENCE SURVEY ANALYSIS

Q1. What sub-genre of horror do you prefer?
Highest: Thriller – an exciting plot
Lowest: Slasher – Includes violent murders

Slasher films have become a typical sub genre for films whereas thriller films create suspense and keep the audience waiting for something to happen. This is why I think that most people chose thriller films as they are more exciting to watch and allows the audience to feel like they are in the story since they are following the plot not knowing what’s going to happen, whereas I think in slasher films people expect there to be torture and typical murder stories.

Q2. What makes you scared the most?
        Highest: Sinister Children
        Lowest: Animals

I think that typically it would be a ghost, however people have become            desentizised to it and now something that was seen as innocence is seen as evil due to many films such as ‘Orphan’, ‘The Omen’ and ‘Case 39’.

Q3.  Why do you like to watch horror films?
Highest: For the thrill and excitement
Lowest: You know you are not at risk

This links to the use and gratification theory that people watch films for the thrill and excitement showing that out film should be something that is original and different to what they have seen in order for them to enjoy our film more.

Q4. Which one do you find most typical in a horror film to be about?
        Highest: Possession
        Lowest: A Quest/Abduction

Clearly from this many films are about possession such as ‘Paranormal Activity’, ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘Insidious’ and because it is so common in horror films the audience are starting to find it boring, however it shows that they rarely see people going through a quest. Suggesting that my audience like to see characters going through a journey.

Q5. Do you prefer silence or loud eerie music?
        Highest: Silence
        Lowest: Loud eerie music

I believe that my audience chose silence as it creates suspense and without music, the audience can only imagine how dramatic the next scene will be as music signifies almost what is coming up next, so without music the audience have to use their own imagination and with this the audience start to connect more with the film.

RESEARCH 31 - POSTER ANALYSIS COMPARISON

POSTER FILM ANALYSIS

2007 -- 1973

Types of posters: Video/DVD release poster
Genre: A supernatural horror film (PARANORMAL ACTIVITY) a psychological horror (THE EXORCIST)

KEY SETTINGS AND CHARACTERS: The film is called ‘Paranormal Activity’ and this is clear because of the way it has been written in bold red to go against the grey scale tone of the background in order for the audience to see it. The image on the poster is of the main characters in their home, which can add a more realistic feel to the film. We can also see a shadow on the door and see that she is pointing at it, which implies that the film is clearly about something which she is afraid of, and by showing the shadow it wants the audience to watch the film because we want to know what it is.
Whereas in the Exorcist, it also shows the name of the film in big capital letters but we cannot see any effects on it like the other film, this implies how back then we didn’t have the editing skills to make thing look 3D or add a shadow effect etc. it was just the plain font. The overall look of the poster has an animated feel to the film almost as though it is the front of a comic, this suggests how back then that was popular and that by making it look like a comic was something that was appealing to the audience, but now it is all about the use of technology and how it can look more scary.

NARRATIVE: The image on the poster of ‘Paranormal Activity’ clearly indicates that the film is set on their everyday lives. Also by her being curled up inside her boyfriend’s arm when she is pointing at the shadow indicates that there is a relationship in the film, and that perhaps it could be happening to both of them but because she is at the front it implies that she is the one seeing the shadow and that it is affecting her more than him.
However, in the Exorcist poster, we see a man looking up to a room where a shining light is beaming down. This could imply that there is obviously something happening in the room, and it already tells the audience that the exorcist is a man, which is something very typical as back then in horror films it was usually the men that would get the role to save the character, whereas now we have a lot more women who can help the victim. Although, in this poster we don’t get as much information about the story like we do from Paranormal Activity because it does show much of the character, or who is being exorcised, although this could be a positive thing as it could lead to more suspense to watch the film.

COLOURS: The colours used in the ‘Paranormal Activity’ poster are very grey and dull, which is something that is typical when looking at a horror poster, as the dull colours represents and unhappy mood and horror films are always negative. However, we can see that they have lightened up the colour more to the side of the boyfriend compared to the side of the shadow which implies that they are trying to show that the darkness is coming for them, and that shadow is clearly an evil presence.
The colours used in the ‘Exorcist’ poster aren’t much different to the use of colours in the 2007 film poster, they both used dark and dull colours to imply that this is a horror movie, and that there is something coming from the darkness, which is a convention of horror. However, rather than a grey tone, there is more of a yellow tone to the film, I think that this adds to the ageing of the film, and because of the yellow tone it adds to the lighter tone of the poster and highlights the areas that needed to be show, such as the beam of light coming at the man.

LAYOUT: The layout of the film (Paranormal Activity) is very simple; it has a landscape image of the couple in their room and then has simple black background around it. This is effective because it allows us the focus on the image and any other text on top such as the name or the quote on top. Although, we have modernised a lot in technology, so perhaps they could have got a  better shot of the couple or the shadow creeping up on them, to make it look a lot more scarier rather than simple.
I think that the layout of the ‘Exorcist’ poster is very similar to the ‘Paranormal Activity’ one as again there is a landscape picture with the title on the top and any other information on the bottom, also with black backgrounds. This implies how even though technology has improved and there are many forms software’s to change the angles and sizes of the pictures; they still keep it simple, especially with the ‘Paranormal Activity poster, where the layout is exactly the same.

WRITTEN TEXT: On the film poster included the title of the film and a few quotes about how intense the film is to make the audience want to watch is even more to find out why it’s so scary. For example the words ‘Don’t see it alone’ or ‘what happens when you sleep?’ These both imply that clearly the film must have an effect on the audience if they don’t want us to watch alone but because of this more of the audience are intrigued to watch it, and by using a question it makes the audience think about what does happen whilst they sleep and that by watching this film you can see what it happens to others, which adds another scary element to the film. Also at the top of the film it gives quotes from other watchers about how the film is the scariest thing ever, and that it is nightmare guaranteed. By including these short  reviews it gives the audience evidence about how good the film whereas before they couldn’t because reviews weren’t seen as important, now we have people reviewing everything on twitter, newspapers etc. which give the audience a sense of what the film is about and a radar of how scary and spooky the film is.
On the film poster of the ‘Exorcist’ they also included the title, but didn’t include any catch phrases or short reviews to add onto the poster. This implies that of course the use of including the title on a film is still important as it identifies the film. But how back then you didn’t need these taglines or reviews on the film poster to make you want to watch the film, you just had to come up with a good name and image. And even the job title of an Exorcists is already scary, so back then it was seen as an effective title, and clearly the audience needed little persuading. This could also be because back then many people weren’t as open to horror as they are now and only little things use to scare them, so for a film to be coming out about the devil could have brought out a huge controversy. But because now there are so many films that are supernatural such as Sinister or One Missed Call, film companies have to try a lot harder to compete, and get the audience to come and watch their film instead of others to make a profit.

RESEARCH 30 - TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF SEQUENCE - PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

CLEMS

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
CAMERA

·         The camerawork in the trailer uses point of view shots as characters are filming in their house with a hand held camera. Therefore allowing the audience to connect with the characters as everything is shown from their point of view so the audience are able to find out information at the same time as the characters.

·         Also the point of view shot puts the audience in the shoes of the character and this means that there is no dramatic irony as the audience know no more than the characters themselves.

·          The camera movements are very shaky to reflect that the characters are filming. This is a convention of the horror genre as it makes the audience feel involved as they share the nerves and unease that the characters do.

·          This choice of camera movement allows the film to look more realistic as the medium shots only show what the characters can see in the house.

·         Mid-shots and close-ups are used to show the audiences reactions to certain scenes in the film.
LIGHTING

·         The colours used in the house are quite plain and simple reflecting the modern feel of the house and the characters that live there

·         The black of the night suggests evil, and darkness whereas the white of the characters bodies implies purity and innocence so perhaps demonstrates the contrast between the goodness of the characters and the evilness of the supernatural.

·         Also throughout the film there is natural lighting, to remind the audience that this is being filmed, so when it’s in the day its bright, whereas in the evening we can see the lighting changing implying that something is coming.
EDITING
·         The calmer, more balanced scenes are shown at the beginning and the more frightening, shocking scenes are shown towards the end causing the trailer to appear unbalanced. Therefore it’s able to remind the audience about the tenser and scarier scenes.

·         Instead of using straight cuts, the film uses dissolve transitions to white noise to remind the audience this is a home video.

·         The pace of the film is made fast through quick cuts of the video camera becoming faded. By doing this, if becomes difficult for the audience to be able to see what is happening

·         The fast pace of the film is emphasised through cutaways as this makes the trailer seem disjointed which creates an uneasy feel.
MISE EN SCENCE
·         The setting used is an ordinary family home and the choice of decoration and props used such as the laptop suggests that this is a modern family, therefore it can relate to the younger audience.

·         Although, even though the setting is modern props such as the chandelier implies that they are mixing the old and the new, which could also suggests that there must be some history in the house, causing the scary events.

·         The bedroom is repeatedly used as a setting where the supernatural events occur. Usually, the bedroom is associated with comfort and safety however the trailer takes this feeling away as the comfort is replaced with feeling uneasy.
SOUND
·         The film uses very little sound, there is no non diegetic sounds to create an atmosphere but, because there is very little sound, tension is built because audiences are waiting and expecting that something will make them jump.

·         Furthermore, by having no non diegetic sounds, a sense of verisimilitude is created as the setting is a normal, quiet home where background music is not needed in order to create an atmosphere. This allows the audience to relate more to the scenes as they could imagine it themselves, this is also another convention of horror films.

·         Diegetic sounds are used in the trailer to create a tense atmosphere as well as creating a sense of verisimilitude.

·         Bangs and loud noises are also another convention of horror films as people often associate this with making them jump or violence. These are played when something frightening happens as this is more likely that the audience will jump.

RESEARCH 29 - RADIO ANALYSIS

RADIO ANALYSIS ON 'ANNABELLE'

At the beginning of the trailer it starts silently, no music just the voices of the characters, this then builds up with a loud bang and more intensifying music. It leads to silence again and all we hear is ‘I like your doll’ which is stating Annabelle so we as the audience know what the film is about. In the middle of the trailer it then moves onto the voices of the family again, stating their story and how they are in grave danger so we know that there is clearly something wrong, we then hear the clock ticking and an old music player, to perhaps signify the idea of how old Annabelle is, and because the old music player is more joyous it contrasts the idea of all the terrible and scary things that are going to occur and implies that something creepy is going to happen because that kind of music is seen as more scary than happy because of past films such as ‘Insidious’.

As the trailer begins to end we hear a build-up of a fire happening and loud screams, we also here an eerie, tense continuous drone in the background. This then stop and transitions into a soft music mobile sound for babies, but this starts to intensify and then suddenly stops into silence, this connotes the idea of doll and how it is a child’s toy which suggests that there is a child involved in the film, which links to being a typical convention. We then hear the door creaking as though someone is coming in and hear the words ‘Who are you?’ which could imply to us that they don’t know what is causing all these events and because we get no reply it created more suspense. It then softly goes back into gentle baby music and ends there.

The use of sound effects such as the clock ticking, moments of silence and eerie music all add to the drama in the film. For example the silence helps us as the audience hear what the characters are saying, yet we also know that something is going to happen after the silence because that is something that is typical in horror trailers. Also the use of the sounds of the baby mobile really added to the idea of how Annabelle is a doll and a child’s toy so it implies to the audience how can something so small have such a huge impact to a family, and also adds a more creepy effect because of how dolls are not real people, yet it affects the family a huge amount in a twisted way.
